A Conversation

Location : Between Jamal to Chandol, Kathmandu on a Micro(bus).

Time : About 2 to 2 : 30 PM

(The following is a real conversation I overheard during my trip back to home from College on Thursday. I recalled each and every words and then translated them. It’s a random conversation between a girl and a boy.)

A: I don’t get time to do read. There are too many homeworks to do.

B: It’s more important to read than doing homework. Board exams are not conducted on that basis.

A: What to do? They (teachers) threat that they will not give marks. Today, one said that he will give 0 in class activity.

B: They won’t do that. They can’t. While providing marks to the board, they have to say that everyone had done at their best. It’s a matter of reputation for the teachers and the college. (That’s true!)

A: May be. By the way, why are you absent most of the times? Do you roam around often?

B: Yeah.

A: Alone?

B: Do I need three, four (girls) to roam with, then?

A: No, but I have heard that you have a girlfriend.

B: Now, who is that back-biting me?

A: I just heard it, alright.

B: Who said that?

A: No one in particular. I just heard it.

B: Actually I go around alone. I don’t have a girlfriend.

A: Most (boys) do. But I don’t have (a boyfriend).

B: Most don’t (have boyfriends or girlfriends). It’s difficult to stay in a “relationship”.

A: I don’t think I will ever stay in a relationship. I can’t.

B: Don’t lie.

A: No, it’s true. I can’t think of it.

B: I don’t like to walk alone carrying a heavy bag.

A: I used to walk a lot with my friends when I used to study at…

B: It’s a different thing to walk with a friend. I can’t dare to walk alone for long on this scorching sun carrying this load… By the way, I don’t know your name.

A: What? We have talked so many times and you don’t know my name.

B: I forget names, what is it?

A: …

B: I keep forgetting people’s names. I will write it down…(takes a copy and writes) You know my name already, don’t you?

A: Yeah. I know you are … but I don’t know your last name.

B: Rai. And yours?

A: … Pulami(Oh, Magar!). What’s yours? (Didn’t she listen?)

B: Rai… I have heard Pulami for the first time.

A: Can you guess what Pulami is? (Magar, Magar!)

B: What? (Magar!)

A: Like Bahun, Chettri, Newar. Can you guess what Pulami is?

B: Hmm… Chhetri. (Don’t you follow Nepali cricket? There is Rajesh Pulami Magar in the team. You should have known that.)

A: No, Pulami is Magar.

B: Magar? You don’t look like a Magarni, though you are a little chhuchi (while speaking, of course!).

A: My mother is Chhetri.

B: Oh.

A: Yeah, usually Magarnis are nakkali. They don’t study much, but I am not like that. I used to be first in my class and one teacher used to say the same. I had been asked if I was a Bahun. I said that my mother is Chhetri.

B: Love marriage, hmm?

A: But most people say that I look like a Newar.

B: Oh, you do look like Newar.

A: Even the pure Newars are confused at times and call me a Newar.

A: You lied. (While saying that you don’t have girlfriend.) I don’t like people who lie.

B: You have to lie sometimes.

A: I can’t lie. Today in class, most of them were lying, one was showing the others’ copy. I stood up and said I had forgot to bring my copy and I was punished. (The teacher had threatened to give 0 because of that. Why do those who speak the truth are always punished?)

B: I don’t give a damn about lying.

A: My mom says to speak the truth always. I think I should also lie sometimes, if I can benefit from it. (Oh no, end of innocence! Never do that.)… I’ll try speaking lies from now on. (Never do that. You can never succeed in it.)

B: Which subject you like the most?

A: Bio(logy). I don’t like Physics.

B: What will you do after reading Science (taking Science in Plus 2)?

A: I want to become a doctor. That’s why I am reading Science. (Your interest in Biology is justified.)

B: Specialization?

A: I want to become a surgeon. (Another good student getting off the competition. Wanting does not work. You have to be desperate. I know that.) But I am scared of doing operations. (That’s really bad! You might have to change your aim of becoming a doctor.) We have to cut (dissect) frog in (Grade) 11. (It might go well after that. You never know.)

B: What interest you have besides studying?

A: I don’t have much interest in anything. But I like dancing.

B: What do you do?

A: I watch reality shows a lot. I like dancing a lot.

B: I mean what dance form you like to do.

A: Hip-hop, Locking and popping. Those sorts.

B: Don’t you like classical?

A: I like it but I find it boring most of the times.

B: Oh.

A: I like Salsa also. I wanted to join dance classes after SLC but my mom did not approve of it.(Damn!) She thought that I would be more involved in dancing than studying. (Why parents do that?) I don’t think I will ever. There is no time now. (You’ll have missed a lot.)

B: What will do after taking science? (Iteration of a previous question)

A: I’ve already said. (She remembers!) What about you?

B: I’ll take Law in the Bachelor’s level. (Oh, a lawyer!)

A: I don’t understand Law. Not at all. It’s too complex. You have to rote a lot of things.

B: I don’t think so. There are many interesting things. It’s all about knowing and practising. And there will be interesting cases (to deal with). It’s not like Science, where you have to rote something because you can’t understand. It’s not always possible to understand everything. (Point!)

A: Anyway, I have to do my homework and take them everyday. I don’t want to be punished always.

(I had to get off within the next thirty seconds. I couldn’t listen anything else. As soon as I reached home, I wrote them down, trying to keep it as accurate as possible.)

Note

  1. The … denotes time interval, which ranged usually between one second to less than 30 seconds.
  2. I neither know nor remember the girl (A) and the boy (B). If you ever came across  this, I apologize that I overheard your conversation. Not only that, I converted into a writing. If I have hurt you somehow, please forgive me (again).
  3. The letters, words, terms or sentences within (brackets) are for explanatory purposes.
  4. The italicized words within (brackets) were my spontaneous responses. In my mind, of course!
  5. This post does not intend to hurt the ethnicity of people. It was a light-hearted conversation and I hope everyone can understand that.

Some typical Nepali words used in the conversation:

  • chhuchi (also chhuchchi) : a girl who speaks in a rude manner. (Used as a joke, here.) To describe a rude-mannered boy, chhucho or chhuchcho would be used.
  • nakkali : a girl who is inclined to do a lot of make-ups or facial expressions. (I don’t know a single word in English for that!) A boy inclined to doing make-ups would be a nakkale.
  • Magar : an ethnic group of Nepal especially in the Western and Eastern Hilly regions of Nepal. A Magar lady is called Magarni.
  • Rai : a major ethnic group in the Eastern Hills of Nepal. Both Magars and Rais are Mongolian in appearance. A Rai girl would be called Raini.
  • Bahun : a colloquial term for Brahmans in Nepal. A lady would be Bahuni.
  • Chhetri : also known as Kshetri. A colloquial term for Kshyatriya. Ladies are known as Chhetrinis. They are the most populated caste according to the census.
  • Newars : a major ethnic group of Kathmandu. A lady Newar would be Newarni.
  • All the caste names used in common are masculine. Adding ‘ni’ as suffix makes it feminine. (You must have noticed that above. I hadn’t thought it was so before I had written this post.)

Yin to My Yang – Soulmates

This post is a response to The Daily Post’s prompt. It says: “How do you define the term “soulmate” and do you believe in the existence of such a person – for you?” I’ll try answering the question in this post.

Soulmate

When you feel peace – a divine peace – in presence of someone; when your soul is  touched by the heavenly music – the sweetest tone which gives happiness to you – when you meet the someone; and when you are lead into light by that person – a light so intense and bright that you would see nothing but Love, you know that the person is your soulmate.

A soulmate is someone you can never stop loving. There is no existence of desire between you and your soulmate. There is Love – in its truest sense and there is peace in your mind, body and soul. A soul mate never lets you fall in love for that person always inspires you to rise in Love. While you might fear of losing your ordinary mates and love, you never fear losing your soulmate. Your bodies may not be together – that’s not always possible, isn’t it? But your souls are inter-woven by a divine thread, which can never be broken. You will always to connected to your soulmate despite the time and consequences.

Does a Soulmate exist for me?

I firmly believe that a soulmate exists for me, though I am not sure if the feeling is mutual. I have not dared to ask that to my Soulmate. To find my Soulmate for the first time was a divine. Coincidentally, I had realized this during the Blood Moon of April, 2014 and I am writing this on the day of Blood Moon of September, 2015!

My post on August “This one is for YOU! shows my belief in soulmate. I had written a letter to my Soulmate (an anonymous character). The realization of existence of a soulmate might be confusing at times. If you ever feel you are confused, close your eyes and ask to your soul. You’ll certainly get the answer.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Yin to My Yang.”

The title and the question touched me. I wrote this post as soon as I saw it popping on the Twitter handle of WordPress.

Between Dreams

Dreams – imagination and aspirations. Dreams – something that inspires me to live a better life. Dreams are seen when I am asleep. Dreams are also seen when I am not asleep. All my experiences are in many ways related to dreams.

When I am asleep…

Dreams are usually less vivid. They are strange combinations of present, past and future along with little fantasies. When I was around 10 years old, I used to recollect the dreams I had seen and write them down on a notebook. That practice improved my ability of writing. While I read those accounts again, I get back to the dreams and I remember some characters like Supspir Man (Combination of Superman and Spider-man), colourful Robocop and my friends who I used to see then. I also discover that my dreams during my sleep have changed only a little during this time. There are strange characters, strange consequences. One dream was so inspiring that it made me imagine Star-Man, an all-powerful superhero with the powers given to him by Lord Brahma, the creator of universe in Hindu Mythologies. A recent dream introduced me to the word, jellybeans. I never knew the meaning before that dream. The same word became inspiration of my science fiction, Jelly Beans.

When I am awake…

I am an eternal dreamer. I imagine many different things. If I have to talk well to other people, including my family members, I have to imagine the whole conversation. I dream of the things I need to speak and things they might tell me. Without such thorough imagination, I can not present myself well. Every second when I am not sleeping, I dream of achieving higher. Higher in the sense of becoming better than what I am now. I have to recollect the memories of errors and then have to improve on them. My dreams help me achieve the goals of becoming a better each day.

boats-372098_1280

The interactions I make when I am awake also have been important in shaping my dreams. A gossip with my little sister, one day inspired me to imagine the Hindu mythology of the Tripuras in a different way. Words have made me dream of the past, the present and the future. They have been the ways of expressing my dreams. Drawings and movies have always inspired me to dream big. Literary works from different writers have also expanded the ways I dream of the world.

When I am  not dreaming…

I am what many would call as normal. I am an intent listener of the talks of my parents, my sister and of my friends. I don’t remember all of their talks, though. It’s really strange that I can remember just a few things that I want to learn from them. The other times I am not dreaming would be the times when I am dead asleep. Dreams, however have always been with my life as my guiding star. At times, I think, how awful would life without a single dream?

An Open Letter to Honourable CA Members

The constituent assembly (CA) is going to promulgate the Constitution of Nepal, 2072 tomorrow(Ashwin 3, 2072) at 5 P.M. This is an open letter to the CA members.

Honourable CA members,

I want to congratulate you all for being able to draft a constitution acceptable to the majority of Nepalese. It took almost 22 months since the election for the second constituent assembly for the drafting. Had the earthquake not struck on that fateful day of Baishakh 12, I am sure the constitution would not have been drafted by now. It seems as though the earthquake had come as blessing in disguise. Anyway, this is not the right time and place to discuss on the earthquake. This is a time of celebration. Celebration of the promulgation of People’s Constitution.

There is not a perfect mood for celebration, however. As I have already said, the majority of Nepalese have accepted the constitution. I, repeat, “majority” because the most Nepalese from the Terai/Madhesh are still not willing to accept it as their constitution. They have the impression that the three large political parties have used their power of majority to draft this book, which they have to call a “constitution”. You all are to be blamed on this.

Some of you representing “Madhesh” decided to leave the constitution-making process. You went back to the Madhesh and then began a strike, which suddenly turned violent. Yet you denied (and you will still deny)  that there was any violence. Both the executive, which includes the mainstream parties, and the protesters promoted violence in the districts of Terai. And you did not step back to involve yourself in making the constitution. By doing so, you have denied and dishonoured the votes of people who had elected you. You have missed the opportunity of a lifetime.

Those of you belonging to the three parties (Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoists) seemed adamant in drafting constitution, which was good to see. But it came at the cost of almost 50 lives in the Terai. You should have worked out the ways to include the leaders from Madhesh. The drafting of this constitution was not easy – it was more difficult than climbing the Everest, I understand. But if a larger number of citizens had accepted, it would have been more meaningful.

Finally, I would like to thank you on the behalf of all Nepalese for showing us a way out into the path of development. I believe that with the promulgation of this constitution, Nepal with take a leap into the path of prosperity. The infrastructures damaged by the recent earthquake will be reconstructed and new infrastructures will be established in all the corners of the country. I congratulate you all again and pray to Lord Pashupatinath (I don’t think I have offended anyone, have I? The country has been declared secular!) that we all remain safe and sound.

Ankit Dhakal “Sandeept”on behalf of all peace loving Nepalese

(P.S. I have also written an article on that earthquake of Baishakh 12 (April 25). You can click here to read it. You might find it useful.)

Get Well Soon, Nepal Government!

To those who know what is happening with medical education in Nepal, the picture tells it all. But there are many more who do not know it. There are others who do not want to accept that there is a problem in Nepal’s medical education.

11986343_494232324068324_6796719663145122377_n

Background

When a child is born into a middle class family, the first thing they do is to celebrate the birth. The next thing the parents do is to think of its future. To secure the future, their first aim is to provide education to the children. So that, the child will eventually become a doctor and turn over the fortunes of the family. The education system promotes such a motive. The teachers guide brighter students into medical profession no matter what subject they are interested in.

The Entrance “Preparation”

Those who have passed their Plus 2 with decent percentage (60% and above- I guess) are eligible to attend the entrance examinations held by the Institute of Medicine (IoM), TUTH (Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital); Ministry of Education (MoE); Kathmandu University Schools of Medical Sciences (KUSMS); B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS); and entrance exams run by the Indian Embassy, Bangladeshi Embassy, etc. Thousands of students join entrance preparation centres, based on their convenience. That’s where I guess the business begins.

The business might well begin from the Plus 2 “colleges” as they bring in “teachers” from reputed institutes. They promote more of their institutes along with some short-cuts which will help the entrance. The short-cuts might not help always. In that case, you are asked to join the institute – a business strategy!

After providing a variable amount of money (None to 25,000) one may join an entrance preparation centre. The course is not extra-ordinary. No question is asked beyond the HSEB (Plus 2) syllables. They teach a touch more than necessary. They teach questions from IIT-JEE, AIIMS, and from graduate level which are absolutely unnecessary. Not bad if you want to join B.Sc., but not of any use if you are sure you can “crack” the examination.

The Entrance and the Scholarship

The pattern and number of questions depends on the exam you are giving. MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) with usually four options are provided. Subjects include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. (English, as well, in Indian Embassy exam).  According to the percentage obtained in the Entrance Exams an allotted seats, one can obtain scholarship. Those who get above 55% can join medical colleges (donation colleges) affiliated with the IOM, KUSMS, and other universities. The entrance exams of the MoE also allows seats under reservations.

Donation and Private Medical Colleges

As already mentioned, those obtaining more than 55% can join these colleges. These medical college can not charge more than a certain amount (30 lakhs?) according to the rule, but this is not the case. They are charging far more than what they ought to (50 to 80 lakhs!). Furthermore, they are concentrated in the urban areas and most of them do not even meet the minimum standard assigned by the government.

Dr. Govinda K.C. and Hunger Strike

Realising the problems faced by students, parents, and patients due the business-oriented medical colleges, Dr. Govinda K.C. has been trying to change this. As a professional who has worked in rural areas, he understands that corruption is the cause of “Medical College Bloom” in Kathmandu valley and urban areas. To provide access to proper medical services, he believes that the colleges should provide service-oriented education.

Dr. K.C.’s sixth hunger strike had ended this Sunday because the government had promised to set up a commission to control the private medical colleges. He felt he has been betrayed because the commission has not been set up yet. He is starting his seventh hunger strike. Students, doctors and civic society are standing by his side to help provide a standard medical education and to improve the condition of medical services. This blog-post is a small contribution to the cause.

Sandeept

Words of Gratitude!

When I had joined WordPress on 30th July, I had already known that I would be a much richer experience than Blogger.com, where I have been blogging for more than two years. While Blogger.com is a simple-to-use blogging platform, WordPress is much sophisticated to use. The first thing that had attracted me to WordPress was variety of ready-to-use themes, and their attractive designs. I had been running three blogging sites in the Blogger when I decided that I would join WordPress. I wanted to copy the blog to WordPress. So, I sought for help here and then using the instructions, I copied my blog here. That blog was, “Stories of Sandeept.”

The first thing I noticed was that WordPress is a much interactive platform. With a social networking site-like design, WordPress helps in promotion of blog in much better way than Blogger. As I was exploring the sites available within WordPress, I am not sure how, I found out that registration of Blogging101 had been opened for the August session. The “course” would begin since 3rd August and I had exams starting on the 5th. I thought for a while and after an extensive mind-work, I finally decided that I should take a chance. I registered for the course and had forgotten about it until Tuesday.

That Tuesday, I happened to check for my mail from an app on my phone. I saw that the Commons- a platform for Blogging 101 had been operating since Monday. I introduced myself on the platform. There I found many friends and many inspiring  blogs. Anand”Vibrant” was one of the first users I met. Ivan Proust was another inspiring blogger, who made me spontaneously write poems- something I had never done before. Some other bloggers worth mentioning are Srinath Krishnamoorthy, N.A. Martin, and of course, Michelle Weber and her team at The Daily Post, who organized this program called Blogging 101.

I am very thankful to everyone, who were supportive during this course. I might have forgotten to mention your names, but please do not take that at heart because: 1. Mentioning all names would be difficult, and 2. Whether I mention your names or not, you’ll be always inspiring me in the blogosphere( is it a sphere really?).

“ADVERTISEMENT PROHIBITED!”

I saw my email early this morning to look at the e-mail sent by Michelle Weber from Blogging 101. The second last bullet of the mail fired:

  • “Don’t leave a plug that simply links to your blog — your name links back to your blog anyway.” – @michelleweber

I use Wattpad to publish my works online and I had happened to see an article there which briefed on the ways I could use to boost up the number of readers. To publish works in time, following other users and commenting on their works were what the author had emphasized. He had also added, “Comment, but do not advertise. Never write, ‘Look at this,’ and then add a link to your stories. You might get viewers, but you will never get a genuine reader.”

Those were not what exactly the article said, it’s just the gist. The words “advertise” and “genuine” had grabbed my attention. This morning when I saw the mail, I felt Michelle Weber meant the same thing. The thought haunted me. We all like to advertise ourselves and our works, but “that’s not the right way,” I guess.

Back to the Wattpad article. The author clearly stated, “Do not follow someone for the sake of following. And do not follow someone because you want to be followed back.” The only genuine way of getting followers is to add comments to their works. The stories are posted with the expectation that they were will be provided with criticism- either positive or negative. The critics will help in the overall growth of the author. “We want to make this a rich learning experience. If you help others in the process, you will also be helped,” and “As your comments are valuable assets, use them effectively.”

The secret to earning the greater number of viewers and readers are within us, the article had said. The time we manage in publishing and improving our works will earn us true followers and genuine readers. To find a genuine reader is the most important, the article had emphasized. That allows a writer to meet his targets. A writer wants his articles to be read, and wants creative comments from readers. Only genuine readers can do that.

This post is for me, for you, for all the bloggers. Do not advertise your post in your comments. While I might not be annoyed, there are people who may not like such an act. To avoid their annoyance, it is better that you quit such a habit. And do make your blogs richer. That will increase your genuine followers.

WHY NOT ME?

–  Among millions of probable fusions, I became a zygote! WHY ME?

–  Several thousands die during fetal stage, I survived! WHY ME?

–  Thousands die at birth, I got a chance to see the world! WHY ME?

–  Almost thousands bid farewell to the earth before they reach 1 year old, I greeted hello to my parents, relatives and friends! WHY ME?

–  Hundreds of people die everyday, I have survived to face troubles! WHY ME?

How wonderful it would be if people thought about previous other questions before talking about the last one! When you are in a trouble, just remember that you have come in this world to do something for the world, not just yourself. If you do so,  I BELIEVE, “WHY ME?” would CERTAINLY be “WHY NOT ME?”
